Restoring a 1914 St. Louis Church With Professional Exterior Cleaning

Exterior Cleaning Solutions STL recently completed a large-scale historic church cleaning project in St. Louis, MO. Built in 1914, this beautiful limestone church has been part of the city for more than a century. Over that time, the exterior stone accumulated extensive organic growth, atmospheric staining, dirt, and grime that significantly darkened portions of the building.

This project was also especially meaningful because the church and surrounding community are continuing to rebuild following the devastating tornado that struck St. Louis in May 2025. As repairs and improvements continue throughout the area, we were proud to play a small role in helping restore the appearance of a building that has stood in the community for generations.

With a building this old, simply applying more pressure isn't the answer. Our goal was to achieve a dramatic improvement while respecting the historic limestone and architectural details that make this property unique.

Over 100 Years of Exposure

According to the client, the exterior of the church had never received a professional cleaning. More than a century of Missouri weather, moisture, shade, pollution, and environmental exposure had gradually changed the appearance of the limestone.

Some areas showed significantly heavier buildup than others, particularly around architectural details, ledges, window openings, and sections of the building that receive limited sunlight. In several locations, what was originally light-colored limestone had become noticeably darkened by years of staining and organic growth.

Our objective wasn't to make a 1914 building look brand new. Instead, we wanted to remove the contaminants covering the masonry and reveal the natural character of the limestone underneath.

Cleaning Historic Limestone Requires the Right Approach

Historic masonry needs to be treated differently than modern concrete and many other exterior surfaces. Excessive pressure can potentially damage softer stone, mortar joints, and architectural details.

For this project, we relied primarily on our low-pressure soft washing methods. Professional cleaning solutions were carefully applied to the exterior to break down organic growth and staining before the surfaces were thoroughly rinsed.

Allowing the cleaning chemistry to perform the majority of the work meant we could achieve significant results without unnecessarily blasting the limestone with high pressure.

This is particularly important when working on a structure that has been standing for more than 100 years. The goal is always to balance effective cleaning with preservation of the existing material.

A Large-Scale Exterior Cleaning Project

The size, height, and architecture of this church made the project particularly interesting.

Cleaning wasn't limited to the easily accessible areas at ground level. Our crew worked methodically across the exterior, addressing elevated sections, large limestone walls, entrances, window surrounds, architectural features, and other areas affected by decades of buildup.

On a project of this scale, consistency is important. Cleaning one heavily stained section while leaving adjacent stone untouched can create an uneven finished appearance. We worked our way around the structure to create a cleaner, more uniform result while still allowing the natural variations and age of the limestone to remain visible.

The Before & After Difference

The finished results show just how much buildup had accumulated over the years.

Before cleaning, large portions of the limestone showed dark gray and black staining, particularly around architectural features and areas exposed to prolonged moisture. The staining muted the natural variation and texture of the stone and made portions of the exterior appear significantly darker.

After cleaning, the transformation was dramatic.

The lighter natural tones of the limestone became visible again, individual stonework became more defined, and many of the architectural details that previously blended into the staining began to stand out.

The difference wasn't created by grinding away the surface or attacking it with excessive pressure. It came from selecting an appropriate cleaning process for the material and giving the cleaning solutions time to work.

More Than Just Another Commercial Cleaning Project

There's something especially rewarding about completing a project like this.

This church has stood in St. Louis since 1914 and has witnessed more than a century of change throughout the city. More recently, the church and its surrounding community have faced the challenges of rebuilding following the 2025 St. Louis tornado.
